During this past week I have had a number of conversations motivated by a webinar I attended. The webinar was presenting marketing basics for beginners and hosted by a lady and gent in their 30’s. The slides were done perfectly and the technology worked well. However, I quickly got frustrated at the presenters. I could see they were a little nervous and it seemed they could not wait to get off the call.
They were fulfilling the duties placed on them and it showed. Uninterested, going through the motions of what the Boss expected. I wanted to jump into their offices and take over. The information was mechanical and technical, but even so. When the magical invisible Soul is present it makes watching paint dry look fascinating!!! (Well maybe that is a bit of an over statement, but I hope you get my meaning).
To be honest I spend a lot of my time speaking with the older generation nicely labelled as ‘seniors.’ I hate that term. To me they are ‘encyclopedias of knowledge’ and they have the most important ingredient: Soul. Maybe if we listened to them more we would have less trouble in our world?
So what is Soul?
Soul is defined differently by everyone. Some say that the soul doesn’t even exist. I will leave that thought to you to decide whether you agree or disagree. However, to me Soul is the passion of life or the deep seated reason for doing some task, job or passion. When someone with Soul speaks, your attention focuses to listen. When someone with Soul plays music, you are rooted in the moment and a tear trickles with pure emotion down your cheek. Soul to me is pure passion or the reason for doing a task well. It is being interested in daily life beyond getting a pay check at the end of the week or month. If an artist does not know how to present without the Soul being present, their artistry is simply noise. I know that when the Soul is alive, moments of creativity Flow. It is magical.

My advice to you is no matter what you do, whether you present mechanical information about marketing, or you demonstrate how to use a technical piece of software, or serve ‘customers’ via countless emails, think of how you can make someone’s day better. Don’t label people as ‘customers’ but as those you have the privilege of making their day better. I hate all these labels. Everyone is to be valued no matter in what capacity we meet them.
Be creative. If you do a webinar with content that is functional, create a Show that brightens up the greyness! Include music and art and mix it in with the mechanical and functional elements. This is how you can create a memorable impact and attract liveliness to your life and work. Find Your Passion, let it be seen. Don’t hide and run in the opposite direction out of fear. Instead choose to be generous in creative ways and always smile with a genuine twinkle.

So this week I challenge you to look with clarity on how you can be amazing at what you do. Remove the notion of placing labels on categories of people and just value them as precious unique experiences that have come across your path. You do this and I guarantee you that your work that may seem uninteresting now will become richer along with your whole life experience. And if you can’t find that Soul part of you, Ask, and Search for what makes you feel like Flying High inside of you. Contemplate on it and don’t give up until you find it.
